Mods have a bad job, they are damned if they do, damned if they don't when it comes to enforcing principle ideals.
Don't be to harsh when judging, I wouldn't do their job.

Instead of toppling the statues of our noted forebears, why not allow them to continue with their exaggerated postures but...bearing a new plaque.
Tell the truth about them. Let new generations see them for what they were instead of the heroic figures the world is given.
They should not be forgiven. or lauded, but exposed as the slave traders, the monsters they were.
It should also be recorded that Edward Colston was also a huge benefactor to the people of Bristol; the very city is beholden to him.

If they're that bothered about the statues of these historical figures, who were all at one point in time, involved in slavery and trading slaves for economic prosperity, then those people should start destroying their buildings, including colleges and universities that were funded by these people who also built them on the back of slavery. So why not tear it all down? But no, we can't have that, can we. They'll only destroy statues and historical scriptures because colleges, universities, towns and cities benefit the people who are so enraged by the historical figures whom they themselves benefited from.
