It feels like the system is set up to fail both the patients and the dentists. It must be so frustrating for a professional to want to help people but be held back by all the red tape and lack of funding. For people who are struggling, the lack of dentist availability, check-ups and treatments must feel like a ticking time bomb for their oral health. It is like a two-tier system where you either go private or have nothing. There has to be a middle ground.

I've seen a post on Facebook from the Daily Mail about this dentist and I was wondering, has anyone heard about this 'Indian dentistry' case? A dentist in Stroud was struck off for sending emails saying she was 'ashamed' to be associated with Indian practitioners and that she didn't want to be 'linked to an Indian company.' She took it to the High Court and they’ve actually reinstated her, saying a 6-month suspension was enough. Seems like a huge controversy for the GDC!

It makes me wonder what everyone else thinks—does a dentist’s background or where they come from actually matter to you when you’re in the chair? Or is it purely about the skill and the quality of the work they do? Does it matter if they are Indian, Irish, or whatever, as long as the dentistry itself is top-notch?

When you're sitting in that chair all that matters is that they know what they're doing.
Since I moved to 'affordable' private dentistry I've noticed the difference with NHS treatment. The last time I had a tooth out on the NHS it was a gruesome experience. He gave me the anaesthetic injection in my gum twisting the needle all around, it was excruciating. I was then sent back out into the waiting room while he saw another patient. Then brought back in to have the tooth yanked out. Everything was all just so rushed. Compare that to a couple of years ago when I had to go private to get a tooth removed.. He explained everything then said I'm just going to probe around a little here, while I had my eyes tight shut, then he said we'll just wait now for that to take effect. He'd given me the injection and I didn't even feel it. And the tooth came out no bother.
My thoughts are with the people who can't get a dentist.

That's exactly it, when you're in that chair you just want someone who is good at the job, knows what they're doing, doesn't rush you and has the patience. If we only care about the skill and if they do a good job, did the GDC go too far by trying to ban her for an email? It seems the High Court thought her work was too valuable to lose.

I suppose it comes down to whether a dentist's personal views even matter as long as the dentistry itself is top-notch? I feel at times it's a fine line and it does remind me of the Luis Suarez case in football where he racially abused Patrice Evra. Fans get banned for life for that kind of behaviour or being racist at a match, yet a star player gets a fine and a temporary ban and then carries on playing because of their talent.

I just find it interesting where the line has to be drawn when someone is trying to contribute to society and work, yet they have to face these racial judgements and prejudice, when they're basically doing the same job as anyone else.

the kybosh on that. I was advised to make an appointment for a scale and polish - £77, fair enough but here's the rub... this appointment wasn't
done by a dentist but by a hygienist. A youth who looked like he was still in 6th form, and assisted by a slip of a girl. This treatment on the NHS
would have been covered under Band 1 - £27.90.

Considering you been referred to a hygienist indicates that a 5 min quick whip round scale and polish under band 1 wouldnt of been acceptable, ... for extensive scale and polish I.e hygienist level then band 2 charges would of come into place and that wud of set you back to £76 and been around 10 mins ..... 30 minutes with the hygienist at £77 wud of been much better financial option ...to save your teeth luv ! ...
