The odds of hitting red or black in American roulette are 47.4%. This rises slightly in European roulette, to 48.6%." - Google
The odds in Bookmakers on the new triple zero roulette games goes down to 46.15%...

Thanks, I should have specified Euro roulette.

Incidentally, in 'Rain Man' Hoffman almost busts a casino's bank by card-counting, but is that just hollywood guff or could somebody be talented enough to do that in real life?

Card counting in blackjack is a very real thing and can be learned, blackjack players are under heavy scrutinization from the casinos security staff if they appear to be doing it.
You can watch Derren Brown doing it on youtube:

A riddle I heard this morning, but I didn't get it.

A doctor and his son are in a frightful car crash. The doctor is killed outright. They rush the injured youth to hospital. The surgeon takes one look at the
patient and says "I can't operate on this boy because he is my child"

explanation?...
This is the best thread I've seen for a long time :) Hope you're keeping ok lovely x

My brother-in-law liked to have a regular flutter on the horses, and I gather he won some but lost more.
He sometimes asked me if I'd like him to place a bet for me during his regular trips to the bookies and I said "Yes okay" to be a good sport, and I usually won more than I lost.
There was no secret to how I did it, I simply picked up the morning paper and noted which horses the tipsters were tipping, and placed my bets on them accordingly. I never won much because they were always favourites, but at least I did better than break even.
My bro-in-law got a bee in his bonnet because he liked to think he was a racing expert, and I used to rub in my success rate by saying my record proved I pick more winners than him, to which he dismissingly replied "Huh, you'll never get rich backing favourites!" so he went on backing outsiders hoping to get lucky, but he never was..:)

Favourites win approximately 38% of horse races...makes me laugh these tipsters tipping them....as they say even a stopped clock is right twice a day...
Edit: I've just been told by my people its 35%...

As this is a 'Riddles' thread, I'm puzzled as to why my bro-in-law was such a dumb cluck in many ways..:)
For examp I once bought a roulette game with a small wheel and a mat with numbers printed on it, and set it up in the middle of the carpet and the family squatted round to play. While the rest of us were carefully placing our bets, he was simply tossing his chips randomly onto the mat.
"What the hell are you doing?" I asked, to which he replied "It's just luck what number comes up, so I stand as good a chance of winning as anybody".
I tried explaining that his chips usually landed on single numbers, so the chance of him winning were very slim, but I don't think he could get his head round statistics and stuff, so as not to lose face he made some excuse to leave the game after losing all his chips.

PS- He used to smoke like a chimney and drink like a fish, and because i've never done either he once half-jokingly said to me "Huh, you're not a man if you don't smoke and drink".
His luck eventually ran out when he died of cancer 10 years ago in his mid-60's, but i'm still around..:)

In the forum, a puzzle played with dare
to gain some favour you chose to share.
those lips pressed tight, typed words bestowed
but beneath the surface a true motive shows.
yet, in your posting success may amass
for you're very skilled in the art of kissing ass.
Nay! twas just a glimmer i see, of words that spread so easily. The wind, It starts with just a tree, a leaf is blown beside of thee. You turn the leaf of destiny and out it comes, one drop of pee.

your poems always end with some vulgarity...
it was beautiful up till then...
I guess desperate for a meaningful ending you resort to basic shock tactics and thats that

Here's a "riddle" that a TV magician (I think it was Derren Brown) once addressed in one of his TV shows-
What are the chances of a flipped coin coming up the same (heads or tails) 10 times in a row?

People were baffled how Houdini did his 'escape' tricks, but I read somewhere how he did it and the answer is dead simple, anybody care to have a guess?

I read somewhere that Houdini had a small metal pin secreted on his person to pick locks and cuffs etc.
For examp when escaping from police cells, he asked to inspect the cell from the inside beforehand, and dropped the pin in the corner or slipped it inside the bunk mattress while he was inspecting the cell. Outside again, they stripped him near naked for a search and of course found nothing, so when he was put back in he simply picked up the pin and picked the lock..:)

It was about 20 years ago so i only vaguely remember the details, I think it was Derren Brown who asked the TV studio audience what they thought the chances were of a flipped coin coming up heads or tails 10 times in a row.
The vast majority said said "Zero chance".
He then ran a film which showed him flipping a coin earlier that day, and heads (or tails) came up 10 times in a row.
He then admitted it was a trick, as he'd had to spend hours flipping with the camera running, until eventually 10 in a row came up and he left the failed attempts on the cutting room floor, and only showed the audience the successful one..:)
The moral seems to be that the more we do something, the better the chance that it'll happen eventually.

PS- highly experienced Alaskan bush pilot Jim Tweto fatally crashed recently, so I suppose bad things like that happen to people eventually if we keep rolling the dice long enough, as well as good things.

A word in the English language

The first two letters signify a male,
the first three letters signify a female,
the first four letters signify a great,
whilst the entire world signifies a great woman.

What is the word?
