I always take a moment to remember Dan Wheldan and Justin Wilson who's lives meant that today's drivers are now protected by a Halo and Screened cockpits ,

Bring them home safe man it's the 1 race i watch that scares me,

Open wheel race cars in the "Big one" are very dangerous on Ovals ,

What a great COTA race, compare that with Sunday's Monaco grand prix. I saw that crash when the car went underneath the other one and burst into flames, I just said out loud 'oh my god' But as quick as it went up in flames they went out, was it the rain, where were the fire marshals? I couldn't believe he got out of that car by himself.
And i take your point about open wheeled cars and concrete walled ovals . . . .

I watched an hour of the Indy500, it wasn't a classic was it? That wheel coming off exiting the pit lane, that should never happen!, it could easily have ended up in the crowd. Funny thing is, I was looking at the left hand side of the screen at the leader board, wondering what had happened to Larson. Only dawned on me later - this isn't Nascar . Before I came to this site I paid little attention to Nascar, now I prefer it over Indy, I can 'relate' more to the cars.

Safety on oval tracks has come a long way since the 'olden days .. .

I've just been watching this video, and what struck me was seeing that on the high banking bend there's no safety barrier, not even a concrete wall. You put a wheel over the lip and you're over the top into the trees

The road races are enjoyable, but not as spellbinding as the ovals. There's something hypnotic for me, watching those cars going round and round those bends at incredible speeds. . . .
