I typed"where" because that's "where" you were. A bit complicated for you?

I don't take any notice of polls where the OP hasn't given her or his own opinion. A sign of weakness and bad character.

First of all, please don't make up feeble excuses to hide your obvious embarrassment.
Nobody is asking you to take any notice. The fact that you have made a comment suggests otherwise. However, your opinion is inconsequential.
And here's me thinking that it was only women who misunderstood logic!

No chance for Barnes Wallis then ? who invented the bouncing bomb to destroy the German dams which supplied their factories ( i think !).It failed but was an interesting idea .
Funny though about Winston Churchill. I remember when young most of the older blokes who actually fought in WW2 didn`t think much to him ! He didn`t survive long after the War anyway as Labour got in immediately ,the workers then wanted better than what they had prior to the war. Churchill was merely attributed as having a voice ,but then so has Boris ?:)

Frank sidebottom. he should be on there.

He is 'up there', if nothing else. Totally underrated comic genius but one who is fondly remembered. They don't make 'em like that any more.

Nigel Mansell is right up there for me ,

Won the 1992 f1 Title in an epic battle ,

Then crossed Stateside and when nobody thought he'd have a chance ,

Won the 1993 IndyCar Title ,

Mansell Re-Mortgaged his own home to compete in the 90's.

He won...That was that.

I absolutely loved Mansell. As a driver he was awesome. Imho because of his muscular, heavy build, he was at a disadvantage racing against drivers with 'boyish' physiques. The extra weight he was carrying must surely have slowed his car, if only by fractions of a second.

You are correct the man had true grit ,

Many have tried to win both titles and failed ,

Transferring from racetrack to ovals should not be ignored

Montoya , Alonso etc all failed,

He won his 1992 F1 crown beating the likes of Senna and Prost and i believe Hill was his team mate ,

Proper Legend Nigel :)

"" Nigel Mansell was a raw, aggressive racer who divided opinion like few others during his decade and a half at the top. His daring brilliance in overtaking team-mate Nelson Piquet to win the 1987 British Grand Prix and the pass around the outside of Gerhard Berger three years later in Mexico are the stuff of legend. From the heart breaking puncture that denied title success in 1986 to the “Mansell Mania” that greeted his ultimately successful 1992 campaign, Mansell captivated the British general public like few before him or since. In contrast, the perceived need for constant drama and heroic deeds at every juncture and an at times grating personality engendered antipathy from the specialist press and his peers alike. That said, his was a story of bravery, resilience and eventual triumph.""

Benny Hill , a natural comedian :). Kicked out of the Country because of his "sexual" attitudes which most men take as normal !
I enjoyed the speeded up scenes at the end of each program.

There are many people in the UK who have done notable things, which have been for the good of the country, even though they weren't particularly nice people, like Churchill, for instance. He was a good wartime PM, but absolutely hopeless as a peacetime PM and not a very pleasant person either.

I am currently watching Churchill: The Long Grass, which traces the political career of Sir Winston Churchill, generally considered in the modern era, as the 'greatest Briton in history'.
For the purpose of this thread, I am citing the BBC poll held in 2002, which is probably the definitive version of recent polls on the subject.
I must admit that some of the candidates proposed in this poll entitled, '100 Greatest Britons', are totally ludicrous suggestions, because their contributions to the advancement of humanity can
easily be discarded.
For example, Guy Fawkes, Richard III, and Michael Crawford were included in the poll, believe it or not.
I know the poll is nearly 20 years old now but Michael Crawford was, at the time, deemed 'the greatest living person'! Hmm, Betty... or should it be, 'Music Of The Night'? Stop the world, I want to get off!

I will list those who were voted in the Top Ten:
1. Winston Churchill
2. Isambard Kingdom Brunel
3. Diana, Princess of Wales
4. Charles Darwin
5. William Shakespeare
6. Sir Isaac Newton
7. Elizabeth I
8. John Lennon
9. Lord Horatio Nelson
10. Oliver Cromwell

I am baffled how Diana, Princess of Wales made the list. I think it was probably a sentimental nomination.
Surprisingly, there were no black Britons on the full list. I wonder if that would be different now?
What I am asking, therefore is: Who do YOU think is, or was, the 'greatest ever Briton'?
and all english which is typical

Just out of interest, who would you propose to be on the list who is not English?
If you happen to look at the list of the 100 contenders in the original poll, you will find Alexander Fleming at No. 20. and Owain Glyndŵr, king of Wales, at No. 23, just for starters.
I would personally rank Fleming in the top ten because of his contribution to global medicine.
