I don't think film or media have helped matters to portray clowns in a positive light. I think the film IT scared a lot of people, and The Man Who Laughs from the 1920's, which inspired the infamous Joker character from the Batman franchise, who was portrayed as a coldblooded, murderous, psychopath.
