Science is not our government. Nor is it the government voice.
That's the nub of the topic. Scientific advice has always been reasonably clear but whether that advice is acted upon by the government of the day is a completely separate issue and not one and the same thing.
A vast swathe of politicians, but mostly hard-right tory, are ideologically opposed to lockdowns and other measures that interfere with an economy. The strong survive... Boris himself stated when scientific advice was a second lockdown "let the bodies stack high". When they did start stacking high, 50,000 + in care homes alone, and suddenly Boris gave a damn, and his unscientific "herd immunity" (without a vaccine) ideology was soon abandoned thereafter.
To cut through the chase, if the tories had remained on the same path and 100s 1,000s had died they would no longer be in power today. The fact politicians do not listen should not be applied to a scientific voice that was clear and consistent as and when the scientific advice regarding Covid 19 evolved in real-time in the here and now.
Scientists can only advise. Politicians choose whether to listen or not.
