To avoid animosity from locals who have been on the housing waiting list for years, how about instead of sending £billions of foreign aid out of the country, use it to build apartment complexes all around the UK for the refugees in need. And not just in northern towns, place some in the shires down south for a change! :)

Do what we're doing in Cornwall for local people, use some hut things called Bunkabins. A lot of people have been turfed out of their rentals because landlords can get double for Air B&B, locals which the council ignores, but when refugees need somewhere then places are found. Probably be used as an excuse to add a few more thousand homes to the housing targets, they'll be way out of the paygrade of refugees but that fact will be ignored. Not that refugees shouldn't come here but can't let a good ol' crisis go to waste.

We deport all the illegal dinghy divers back to France as international law demands ( to first port of entry) which the neighbors from hell should have done already. Simple ! So Macron is to blame ( and Boris for being a soft touch).

Housing people is easy..... finding them a place they want to stay isn't.

There are tons of empty houses in really bad areas.... and this is were the Afgans are off too.

Lovely Liverpool...Blackpool....Solihull to name but a few.

And before you all moan... these areas have been offering £1 houses for years with little or no interested.

How long they will stay there is up to them.... but there a reason these places are cheap. No work...over run with crime and drugs..... poor housing & living standards.

I think within a few months time there be off to London and the south :)

Agreed. But in the meantime it is surely better than being strung up, your hands chopped off, a whipping, the ladies treated as subhuman.
What we must avoid is the ghetto mentality wreaking havoc as in France.

Back in the 80's the Vietnamese boat people were scatter around the UK. And before you start... yes I know it was another problem the yanks forced on us.

The main problem with this was.... there was no support from there own community's and they felt isolated.

There needs to be a community put in place but this alienates local people. The Roma in Sheffield are a good example of this.

‘A time bomb’: how social tensions are rising in a corner of northern England

I think all we can do is face the fact there gowning anger at the UK's immigration policy not just from local people but from establish immigrant community's.

And there nothing we can do since a bunch of old men sign us up to the UN's refugee convention after WW2.

Housing people isn't necessarily easy. It needs political will otherwise it won't happen.

The Times newspaper has reported that the average size of families coming to the UK through the government’s scheme for Afghan interpreters and other support staff is seven people. So a number of 4 and 5 bedroom houses will be needed. Good luck with that! One solution would be to knock two houses together, but that would deprive not one, but two local families on the council house waiting list...
One suggestion I like, and I think it came from Labour's far left - All those empty properties in London, the ones bought just as an investment, just left lying there, vacant. - Commandeer them to rehouse the refugees!

I’m sure Gary Lineker and Marcus Rashford can put a few up.

Well we can see the government's strategy today. There going to remove the baby boomers from council housing system and move into rest homes.

This will create jobs and free up social housing.

Don't expect to get one.... councils will give this housing to the most in need. (Depending on there pc views at the time.)

Now who got a paddling pool and wants to come to France with me? We can pick up a few cheap beers then float back on it. We get a free council house on our return.......keep for 5 years, buy at discount and flog :)

You might want to learn how to spell Afghan properly if you want to be taken seriously.
Never took you for a grammar Nazi Oswest, disappointed

Come on really people.
When Maggie decided to sell off the council houses does anyone remember that there was also a pledge to replace them with other affordable housing..
No they dont, because Major overturned it, the asshat.

Theres a little point that people should consider, "Build Strategy", is usually used in Naval terms, after all it takes a couple of weeks to build a tank, but an aircraft carrier, a frigate, they take years.
It's a term that is infrastructure based, all the parts need to align to make it happen.
Housing is the same way.
Building materials are a minor point, the planning permits take years to debate, during which time laws change on building requirements, hence re-starting the whole application.

There is no simple fix to a housing crisis we have.
How can you expect young kids not to embrace the ideas of a socialist society, when they haven't a hope in hell of buying a house.

How many of the folks in chat have kids who cant get on the property ladder, which gives them the stability to further relationships and careers knowing they have a firm footing.

So before anyone goes on to blame anything, take a step back and see who has fecked up the most.

If you want affordable housing right now, cut the red tape, cut the "Eco-Freindly" *hit and just get on with it.

The Government has just spent £1.6 Billion on advertising to keep the media on board through Covid.
I mean which Newspaper or media outlet will print anything the government would like to be kept quiet for that amount of money.

But how many houses would that have built for the kids who just want to step onto the property ladder and get started in life.

I will ask this though, all those Afghani folks who are coming over here, they helped our military while we were there.
However you want to debate if we should or should not have been there you cannot deny they saved our Squadies lives and for that I am thankful.

Although the ones that b*tched about being put in a hotel and wanted a house..

People are strange :)
