It's a shame.

But the Nitty Gritty of it.....It isn't the same when we were kids.

Ha Ha Ha.

You are funny. Your site reputation and which you seem completely oblivious of is even funnier.

Four days ago you claimed you would ignore me (and my advice is yes ignore me) and yet here you are again. Moaning away endlessly about other chatters. Desperately fighting like a rat on a sinking ship to preserve your perceived site status. Alongside your extremely elderly sidekicks.

Very funny.

Is it OKAY now to just post a picture instead of actually using Your Brain to reply?....

I'll never do that.

When you're young it is so easy to learn - everything sticks. Place a young child in an environment where two languages are spoken - it will soon be bilingual, but you just try and learn a foreign language as an adult... Try learning to play a musical instrument as an adult - you'll soon give up because most instruments require you to be dexterous, try and get your brain to develop that skill in later life... When you're older, yes you can google stuff, but after a while you've often forgotten it. the brain doesn't seem to retain things as well... Which is why a good education at the start is crucial, without it, you're always playing catch up with a huge chip on your shoulder weighing you down (that might just be me) :)
I do remember a few things .Whatever happened to your old Avatar ?:D

So many things. I was university educated. As a lifelong learner, with a drive not to let my brain deteriorate to the point of becoming useless at retaining things, I have studied and retained a fourth language in my 50's to fluency.

We are our own barriers to learning. We gain much knowledge and become cynical - questioning why language is like it is, refusing to accept the exceptions to rules and not just accepting that words and their pronunciations or spelling don't make sense.

Instead of just absorbing everything like giant sponges, accepting in all new words, without filtering due to like or dislike, we waste time with analysis and debate. Children accept, without question, and question without fear of sounding stupid for not knowing.

And that's the thing that makes our learning experiences different, not our inability to learn new tricks, as an old dog.
There is also much evidence that everyone starts to deteriorate after aged 21. The real ageing starts at age 25 with Hearing starting to weaken. At 40 it is practically impossible for anyone to learn a 2nd language, etc onwards and downwards . This is Scientifically proven, not just my opinion as a chatter on here :).

Plenty of ex-University students are learned ,and are now driving delivery vans for Tesco or on the dole .
Being educated alone doesn`t guarantee a life. You need a certain amount of luck too. It also helps to have the backing of very rich parents .:) Ask Boris .

Stop these useless degrees such as media studies, social "science" and the like.
Therein lies the problem. Nothing to do with Boris but more to rich ex pm's such as Blair who insisted everybody should have access to UNI.
And in the process, destroyed many excellent Victorian type technical colleges. No fake degrees there...
Better off with city and guilds or National certificate/ Diploma than a rubnish degree. Better still get an apprenticeship and get paid to learn somethin useful. ( just look what skilled craftsman can make nowadays...)

I've just finished an old book by H Rider Haggard and all through the book was "&c". It confused me, but I just thought it might be a misprint so ignored it whenever I saw it in the text. My other half has now informed me that "&c" just means "etc". It's awful being so bloody uneducated. :(
99% of books are written just for the benefit of the writer. The writer doesn't give a **** who reads it, so long as the reader pays (99p)

One of the worst abuses of our wonderful language ,which annoys me much, is listening to TV anchors ,reporters and their ilk, coming out with that meaningless beauty, "if in fact" ...
