I've just finished an old book by H Rider Haggard and all through the book was "&c". It confused me, but I just thought it might be a misprint so ignored it whenever I saw it in the text. My other half has now informed me that "&c" just means "etc". It's awful being so bloody uneducated. :(

i recently got a book by Edmund Bogg and when i was reading that, i realised how much had changed, thats from about 1900 and the terminology is wonderful, theres one bit where he describes people coming from north as having a "base mingled speech"

Depends what you mean by 'good education'.

From the web:

What is a Good Education?

Education literally means the things a person learns by being taught. So, the definition of a good education would be the things a person learns by being taught well. But what exactly does that mean?
No one has ever told you that, right.
To me a good education is basically achieved when a person has a general to specific knowledge of the things that have happened in the world, things that could happen in the future of the world, how to communicate with others, and how to live safely in the world today.
In order to live in this day and age, a person needs to know what has happened to people or places before their time.
This is basically learned in a history class. If the person is well educated in history, they should know major events that have happened in the US as well as other parts of the world.

When I was a kid my Nan said to me "The day you dont learn something new is a day wasted".

Once you get past what we laughably call an education in the UK, the only person who can teach you anything is yourself.

We have a beautiful thing called the internet which can give you different opinions and views of history, a plethora of facts and fictions.

All we have to do is ask ourselves questions.

The facts and fictions the internet creates are subjective, true.
With some extreme views.
But the truth usually lies somehwere in the middle of these views.

History is only as good as the facts we know or led to believe by propagandisation of history due to documents being withheld.

How we ingest information is coloured by our own beliefs and ideals.

Those with a "Good Education", the univercity educated, the well versed, etc are still simply human.

Applying those beliefs and understandings still relies on one thing.

"Common Sense".

Which unfortunatly, is not as common as it used to be.

Plenty of ex-University students are learned ,and are now driving delivery vans for Tesco or on the dole .
Being educated alone doesn`t guarantee a life. You need a certain amount of luck too. It also helps to have the backing of very rich parents .:) Ask Boris .

I might be stating the obvious here and I do not want to appear condescending :)

However, there are extremely cheap adult courses at every FE college in the country, whether it be part-time or full time and these are designed specifically for adults. The courses are also subsidiZed if you are on a low income.

Just about every hobby or interest is covered. From beginner to degree + level. 1 hour a week or full time.

Have a great day.

So many things. I was university educated. As a lifelong learner, with a drive not to let my brain deteriorate to the point of becoming useless at retaining things, I have studied and retained a fourth language in my 50's to fluency.

We are our own barriers to learning. We gain much knowledge and become cynical - questioning why language is like it is, refusing to accept the exceptions to rules and not just accepting that words and their pronunciations or spelling don't make sense.

Instead of just absorbing everything like giant sponges, accepting in all new words, without filtering due to like or dislike, we waste time with analysis and debate. Children accept, without question, and question without fear of sounding stupid for not knowing.

And that's the thing that makes our learning experiences different, not our inability to learn new tricks, as an old dog.

If you have got the time to spend hours typing on an internet chat site auld fella you also have the time to commit to a P/T 1 hour course weekly at your local FE.

That's real life.
