What does UK Chat and Hotel California have in common?

Essentially, quid pro quo can be seen as literal reciprocation.
I used that example in summary response to both Stephen Fry, and your lesser self.

"Can be seen as" and "means" are very different.
That is subjective, the langauge allows for the difference, as does the interpretation.
To you the interpretation means one thing, to me another.
So I will say again.
"People would prefer to be right than be effective".

Your arguing a moot point, your subjective opinion and mine are different, neither are wrong to us.
To argue the point is neither right, nor effective as the difference of opinion comes from percieved understanding.
You are extrapolating a more complex langauge (English) onto a limited langauge.
One can derive meaning, but not intent or subjective rationality of langauge only when one understands both in entirety.

Thats without taking into account the spoken word, a dialectic amalgamation of langauges and phraseology which surpasses most modern documented langauge, never mind the historical.

Neither of us can be right as we don't understand the context and the subjective thought process behind them.
So why bother trying to be right, just be effective and understand that we don't know sh** apart from the limited knowledge our tiny minds have allowed us to remember, reflect and play with.

Sorry, I began to yawn deeply after the first paragraph.
Brevity is the soul of wit. Something you obviously need to learn.
At this rate you will be usurping my 'mantle' as the Forum bore, and we wouldn't want that, would we?
Like I am going to concede to your blatantly obvious inferior knowledge on the subject.
Please argue with the 'female' contributors, not me. They are more on your 'intellectual plane'. (I won't resort to a plethora of witty jibes here).

Philosophy not a forte then.
Each to their own :)

I'm beginning to understand why some are begging to be deleted.

Chat can become addictive if you've got nothing else to do. You put in as much as you want to get out, whether that's building friendships, perhaps some romantic online flings, or just coming on for a bit of company. The person could be lonely, and this is the only form of socialising they can get access too, especially during the early stages of the Pandemic and the lockdowns. I'm sure this place kept a lot of people sane.

That's why Hotel California is so attractive. It can offer you everything you desire. Plenty of luxuries and fun times. The only catch is that you can't bring yourself around to leave. The door's freely open, you're not forced to stay, but the temptation of all those pleasantries are too difficult to resist, as you find yourself closing that exit door and re-entering the Hotel.

Forums certainly serve a place. They can be addictive, or just somewhere to while away spare time. Personally I prefer the interaction on forums to watching TV or playing online games, which I never do.
I agree with you that maybe some people may be lonely and use them for company, certainly, like you say, over the last 20 months when many people have been separated from friends and families.

It's a form of entertainment and something to pass the time. Same for gaming or watching TV. It depends on your overall preference and what kind of entertainment you're into. What someone may find enjoyable, others may find dull and boring, or think something is not for them based on a stereotype. Gaming as an example, is seen as something that only kids will do, but there's more and more older people finding a passion in gaming today.

I honestly cannot understand why people give the Forum preference over the chat rooms, especially if they enjoy something akin to a conversation.
This medium is nothing like messaging anyone at all. The method is far too slow and erratic to provide a platform for dialogue.

You may as well just converse with others in the Conversation part of your profile if you are going to be selective about the recipient(s).
Personally, I enjoy both the Forum AND chat rooms for different reasons, but essentially, I find the chat rooms far more satisfying because of the immediacy, which you don't get in the Forum. Some replies are days, months and even years later, which I find quite laughable.
As for this being a substitute for friends and family: then I think that being more reflective on the individual rather than the collective.
A lot of people feel out of their depth in the chatrooms. It is, unfortunately for some, a very long learning process.

People find their own preference, it's certainly nice to be given the choice.

What's the connection between Moriarty and a raven? Is it Conan-Doyle meets Poe? ;)

Nah, Moriarty, apart from Holmes reference, has an old Irish meaning as a navigator.
Ravens were used by the Norse to find land.
Plus it was the only Raven pic I have that could fit in the damned circle.

Never really liked Poes Raven, seemed like a self absorbed man to busy battling his own self pity and fear to find the light of the world.
A sad tale of loss, true, but as a monologue about grief and emerging from it, it's a bit sh!t.

But wtf do I know, the classics are that for a reason.

Like you, I have not been in any chat room, I prefer the forum format.
So far, as forums go, I have found it friendly, obviously there will always be some tosser who takes offence or follows you round trying to pull you down....they dont count.

I like your 'dont give a f••k attitude, it would be a boring place if everyone posting agreed with each other.x

I'm glad you've found it friendly. It's been lovely to 'meet' you :)

Unfortunately, I don't have much of a filter between what I think and what I say or type! And it has got me into trouble more than a few times (including almost getting me the sack on one or two occasions  ). I do try though...well, not every day.

Thank you CrazyCatLady, it's been lovely to meet you too on here.
It's a nice forum, some real characters, including you.

In real life, it's always good to know where you stand with people, at least you say what you think, I love people like that.
I am similar, though I do have a filter, because I hate to upset people unduly, but in the main, being upfront and straight forwards is the best way to be imo...and that applies on forums too, though I suspect less people follow that train of thought when they can hide behind a computer.
