Looking for a new laptop/pc.

Budget £1000.

Would i get an half decent branded one for that amount?

might stretch to £1300 at a push.
it all boils down to how comfortable and knowledgeable you are about computers these suggestions are good but if you are a layman they will not mean much to you. get a friend that does know a bit about them to help.

I just wouldn't spend that much money on one machine...
Explaining computers.com with Christopher barnatt on YouTube is the best place to learn a lot.
Wouldn't spend anymore than £200 on a laptop or desktop, you could have 5 machines for your budget, windows 11 or Linux using eBay , and they would be fast ones.
High end stuff is bad for drivers and compatible software

used for browsing/shopping etc.
May be overkill but i wan't the best.

thanks for your reply
I5, 8 or 16gb ram, 250gb SSD, Linux mint or Ubuntu, knocks off £120 going straight to Microsoft... perfect for shopping, web browsing...just put "linux laptop" into eBay

Linux mint pretty much leaves the command line alone

But the only 4 commands you really need are
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

sudo apt autoremove
sudo apt autoclean

Use the up and down arrows on the keyboard to access commands history so you don't have to type it in every time
