Please note the following as the law has now changed in the UK as of February 2026.

New Criminal Offence (February 2026): Under the Data Use and Access Act 2025 (coming into force in Feb 2026), it is now a criminal offence to create or ask for the creation of a non-consensual sexually explicit deepfake, regardless of whether the image is shared.
Ban on Nudify Apps: The UK government announced a direct ban on apps specifically designed to "nudify" people.
Penalties: Those convicted can face severe penalties, including unlimited fines and, in some cases, being added to the Sex Offenders Registry.
Protection for Children: It is already a criminal offence under the Protection of Children Act 1978 to create, distribute, or possess indecent images of children, which includes AI-generated "pseudo-images".
International Action: The UK is working with international partners to stop the proliferation of these apps.
