We have all seen the news from Syria over the weekend. Another tin pot dictator gone... for now.

And here is our problem, Bashar al-Assad is married to a British woman.

Asma Fawaz al-Assad (Arabic: أسماء فواز الأسد; née Akhras; born 11 August 1975) is the former first lady of Syria, as the wife of Bashar al-Assad during his tenure as president from 2000 until he was overthrown on 8 December 2024. Born and raised in London to Syrian parents, she became First Lady when she married al-Assad, then President of Syria, on 13 December 2000.

I bet good money on Assad's having a house in UK and money in the bank here. They could arrive at Heathrow first thing in the morning and be out the door on the way to a hotel within an hour. There nothing the gov can do to stop them, they can even apply for UK passports under our current laws.

I'd be happier if he paddles over the channel like everyone else ;)

The UK is becoming a place for war criminals to hide out in. From Germans from ww2 to Rwanda, they always turn up here.

How can someone granted a UK passport be "hiding" in the UK.

Hiding in plain sight, right?

Well if you gassed 20,000 people and butchered more.... would it be safe to walk the streets here? We do have a large immigrant community and one of them may spot you. in tescos

Assad would be arrested the second he landed in the UK and then held in custody and tried for war crimes, or deported to France, who have issued an international arrest warrant.

How you reached the ludicrous conclusion that he could be granted a UK passport and seek sanctuary in the UK only you know. :)

Do you remember Julian Assange? How long did he sit in a UK jail before we let him go? He had an international arrest warrant too:rolleyes:

Here is law:

British citizenship is normally automatically passed down one generation to children born outside the UK.

For example, you might automatically become a citizen if you’re born outside the UK to a British parent. But your children will not automatically be citizens if they’re born outside the UK.

If you’re not automatically a citizen, you may be eligible to apply to ‘register’ as one.

Assad's wife was born here, she got a UK passport, she can walk right in. Under the above law, her 3 kids can too. Just leaves hubby.....

Your partner or child may be able to join or stay with you in the UK if:

  • you were part of a family before you were forced to leave your country

ludicrous system right ;)

You appear to under the false impression that because Assad is married to a British citizen, it automatically grants him immunity from prosecution in the UK, under British law or under internation treaties in which the UK is a signed up member.

You are just plain wrong. :)

Btw, if Assad owns a house in the UK, then why would he need to stay in a hotel?

Oh Kev... you're simple at times
What laws did he break here? Did Assad refuse to pay his council tax or nick a bag of spuds from Aldi?
Assad's done nothing wrong here !!!

After flying into the UK, it will take a few weeks to set up the electric and gas on the house. Best to stay in a hotel until its done ;)

So we have jumped from Assad would be free to come to the UK, awarded a UK passport and the government couldn't do anything about it. To Julian Assange (who appealed his extradition). Then a link you claim demonstrates Assad's wife and children could claim a British passport. Now you claim because Assad committed no crime in the UK he would not be arrested.

You also appear to believe that a billionaire with a 20 room house in Mayfair, with 15 staff at hand, has his gas and leccy switched off when he/she is out of the country. :)

His wife's got a UK passport now.
His kids mite have them too, we dont know but all 3 can get one.
Cos his Mrs and kids have UK passport, he will get one too. They wont break up a family.

We wont arrested them, they may bring charges ageist Bashar al-Assad but the others are free to go. I cant even see them putting Bashar al-Assad in jail.

And his place in Mayfair mite look like this:

To be honest I am still laughing that you believe billionaires, the 1% wealthiest people on the planet, don't employ (trusted and vetted) permanent staff in their various multi-million pound homes around the globe. Have the leccy and gas turned off, with not a caretaker or gardener to be seen when they are not in residence. Then lay off all their staff on their 100 million pound super yachts for 11 months of the year because they only use it 1 month. :)

Well Kev, do you think they look round them before buying them?

Naaaa

They just buy them and never move in ;)

When you have the odd palace, why worry about a 10 bed house in London? The house will still gain in value and you will still make a profit when you sell it, even if its falling down.

So we have jumped from it would take two weeks to reconnect utilities in Assad's second home in Mayfair (try more like 48 ish hours), to an uninhabited run-down investment property, in rack and ruin, that would take a year to repair.

Let's summarise.

You have no evidence Assad is entitled to a British passport, you have no evidence he would be awarded one. You have no evidence he would be awarded leave to stay in the UK, and you also have no evidence he is immune from prosecution in the UK.

Followed by some random comment about stealing spuds in Aldi (which you wouldn't be prosecuted for).

Probably, because you just made it all up, right?

Ta raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa :)

The Home Office last year identified nearly 100 suspected war criminals who had made UK immigration applications, figures released to the BBC suggest.

The majority of cases involved people already likely to have been living in Britain for a number of years.

Suspects originated from countries including Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Rwanda, Serbia and Sri Lanka.

The Home Office says it is determined the UK doesn't become a "refuge for war criminals".

Yes Kev.... no evidence the UK done this before

Have UK's not been doing it for years too

They're saying President Assad has been killing his own people, that's what happens in a civil war.
All those Syrians who flocked to this country escaping from Assad, will they now return to their homeland? I suspect not. Perhaps Assad's supporters will now claim asylum here, so that the tribal conflicts that's been going on for centuries can continue on the streets of the UK.

We cant deport them right now, even if they wanted to go.
Once people get to the UK they ever leave. Our laws are a joke !!!

Why on earth would someone who frequently claims (boasts) they worked for the UNHCR (a refugee agency) in the Middle East want to deport any refugees from the UK?

Kev, real refugees don't want to come here, they want to go home.

Think about it, if you'd been forced out of your house and ran out of the country......would you come here? Or would you sit on the boarder in a camp, learn to use a gun and go back?

Genuine refugees have a look in there eyes you just cant fake. They have lost everything and want it back, they don't care how they do it.

The ones we get in the UK are most young people, they didn't have much to leave behind and looking for better opportunities. I view them more like people heading off to Australia from the UK They want a better life and you cant really blame them.

Still confusing economic migrants seeking a better life for their families with refugees fleeing war and conflict and or persecution.

Refugees have the legal right to seek leave to stay in the UK, undocumented or irregular migrants do not.

I won't go on about it, you carry on, though. :)
