the friend or the messaginger? ok go to your profile click on it find conversations.. or click on persons name and start one there, failing that use smoke signals

Yes.. just type something on the their profile they'll get an alert as soon as they log on.

So this is your messaging system. You can start, continue and leave conversations through your messaging box in the top right hand corner next to your notification bell.

And then after that you type the participants name, conversation title and then the message that you want to send to whoever. You have the option at the bottom to make it a private message, or a message that everyone can see on the main page.
