I have been inspired to create this thread, because of my comments on the Room 101 thread.

In the recent media, there have been at least two seperate incidents of dogs attacking people. On both occasions the victims have died. One of the dogs was described as a "softie", but it proves that dogs can be unpredictable, and may attack without warning.

I'm not a great fan of dogs being allowed into almost every public space; shops pubs ect. It can be quite irritating, trying to clamber over various dogs lying on the floor of various pubs. And I draw the line at being slobbered over by dogs, whose owners can't keep them under control.

Having said this, I am not completely anti dogs. Some of them can be loving and sweet natured.

What are people's thoughts on this subject, or am I going to regret creating this thread?

I love dogs. But i know that not everyone does. Always keep mine on leads, but if people do visit, then they have to know what to expect. Our dogs are part of our family. Some friends won't come round, and that's fine.
I like all animals i just don't like irresponsible animal owners! I worked for freshfields animal shelter for 6 years so I know how irresponsible people can be!

Yeah, some people shouldn't be allowed to keep dogs. My dogs are tiny, but I never let them run wild, and if we're walking and I can see people in the distance, I always pull their extendable leads in. Lots of dog owners are under the impression that everybody else loves dogs, but that's not the case.

I love all animals and yes I’m a big dog lover!

I adore dogs because they offer a pure innocence and unconditional loyalty, accepting you exactly as you are without caring about your looks, bank account, or mistakes. They are completely non-judgmental and show total admiration, and unlike humans who hold grudges for ages, dogs forgive instantly and just want to be near you. Their emotional intuition is incredible, as they can sense illness or fatigue and provide a vital sense of purpose, routine, and life structure on days when it’s hard to get out of bed. They act as a social bridge to the world and live entirely in the moment, making them true members of the family. There is simply no better feeling than a welcome-home wagging tail or a relaxing cuddle that naturally lowers your heart rate and stress levels.

It is easy to blame dogs or even their breed or temperament, but dog attacks are mainly maybe not always but almost always the result of dog owners failing to manage the situation. It's the owner's responsibility to know their dog, so if they have a nervous dog that doesn't like busy places, they shouldn't take them there. Owners should use things like a yellow lead to warn people to give them space and always keep the dog on a lead if they are unsure how they will react. If a dog is known to be vicious, they should definitely be muzzled. Too many people buy dogs and just don't put the effort in to train them or look after them properly, but it's their legal and moral duty to make sure their dog isn't a danger to others

However I’m aware that sometimes something can trigger a dog, and no one sees it coming.

My friend lost his wife to a dog attack few years ago, the owners said they were ok to say hello to and everything was fine. Then as she turned to leave she was attacked by the two Rottweilers. She survived and was treated, but passed a few weeks after at home. I believe these dogs were on leads, but the owners said she was ok to stroke them and clearly that wasn’t the case.

He still feels its the owners responsibility, duty of care to the dogs and job to handle their dogs correctly etc.

I suppose sometimes you just never know, you could get struck by lightning, a car could mount the pavement, or you could get hit by a bus etc.

Released last week at full weight of 600 grams Sonic the hedgehog. Found tangled in chicken wire last year. Sonic was over wintered in my garden shed he didn't hibernate because his weight was that low
he wouldn't have survived. Fattened up with slugs, worms and cat food. Good luck Sonic

This is my boy.... well, he's not really mine, he belongs to the croft. He's a working border collie who tends to a few hundred sheep. In the house, he's the most loving, gentle, intelligent creature you could meet..... When he's working, he's a machine that is fully able to take on rams that outweigh him sevenfold.
