What a bargain.

I bought this today for a relative who was talking about buying something unusual to use as decoration on a fire hearth in front of an electric fire in her backroom. Now she might not like it but since it only cost £23 on eBay, and looks like it cost in the £100s, it was worth the risk and I will steal it back if she doesn't like it.

Chuck it on a plate stand and good to go, the pattern breaks up the rather sterile fire light and the shadows it makes (with the lights off), and makes it much more interesting and pleasing to the eye.

I do enjoy thinking out the box around Christmas and will often search for unusual unique vintage costume and or jewellery, knowing you will never find a replica anywhere else and which doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg.

Happy gift hunting, guys!

Oooh it's on its way, I will take a pic of the 'metatrons' in front of my own fire to decide if I like it or not and post it. I mean, what gift can you buy a religious relative that they haven't received before, right?

It's 50 cm, so a perfect fit for a standard fire (impression of a fake fireguard for a fake fire).

"Metatron is an angel in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. He is a powerful archangel who serves as a celestial scribe, guide to humanity, and speaker for God. Metatron is also known as the Prince (or Angel) of the Presence, and is often identified with Michael the archangel or Enoch."

Hey guys, here it is, the bargain 'metatrons' in all its shining glory. This is in front of one of the fires in my house, but it shows sorta what it will look like, and of course it will look a lot better at night when it blends in more and casts random shadows.

I am sure that my relative will absolutely love it for what it is, a quirky Xmas gift rather than a pair of socks and a tin of Quality Street.

If you want any interior design advice guys I am always here for you, ps, the mini mirror balls were not my idea. ;)

I didn't buy it for you. I don't care what you like or don't.

My relative will love it. :)

Then why do you keep showing me the bloody thing?

Well you obviously know more about your relative's lack of taste than I do. ;)

If you don't like looking at the "bloody thing" then don't click on the thread, stupid.

Thanks for sharing your much valued opinion, though, and I will be sure to pass it on to my relative. :)

Whereas, I know from years of experience that when I paint it (3 times) with a good quality walnut stain, it will then take on the appearance of a far more expensive piece, carved out of a single piece of solid wood, and absolutely perfect for what she wanted as an unusual centrepiece in front of her rather bland leccy fire.

Quirky, just like other decorative objects in her house, and rather than a sterile "same as everyone else" mass-produced shite (yes, you know what I mean). ;)

You either have taste, or you don't. ;)

I don't suppose it's all that bad. :)

Btw, tell your mate (probably a relative and i have it on iggy), the master builder who claims it takes 18 months to build 500 houses, tell him the Tories built 240,000 in 12.

Only 235,500 out.

Who claims you couldn't build 500,000 houses in 5 years and when the Tories built over 1,200,000 in.... five years.

Only 700,000 out.

Master builder, my arse! :)

Btw guys, I am obviously a modest guy, so I do hate to boast, but I crafted those two figurine sculptures in that picture with my own fair hands.

Pretty damn good, right? :D

Good morning guys, unfortunately I got woken up just before 5am by a 40 kilo American Bulldog laid flat out near my head on my queen-sized futon. Snoring, and with one huge clawy paw poking me right in the eye, and the noise was so loud my headboard was actually vibrating.

Well, I hope it was the dog snoring, or I am in big trouble...

I am still laughing about the thread publicly complaining about being 'muted and booted' in mainchat last night, and what an excellent, positive start to a wet and windy Saturday. I mean, to falsely accuse one person is funny enough, but to do it to two is downright hilarious. :D

If I get time today, because an Aldi shop usually leaves me requiring 4 hours recovery in a quiet dark room to recuperate, I will prepare and stain my delightful 'metatrons'. Now, this isn't as simple as it sounds if you want to do the job properly. Ronnseal, good for your garden fence, just won't do a good job on lazer cut MDF and any water based products might cause it to swell and turn into a pulpy mush.

I will spare you from all the boring detail now and, because I am still laughing so much about last night.

Just because I know you want me to, I will report back to duty, and share another picture of the 'metatrons' as and when.

Happy Saturdaying guys. :)

This thread got me thinking... I was going to give my brother the usual bland Christmas present of socks or aftershave etc. But then I thought no, he can have this little curio. He will really appreciate this desktop thermometer/paperweight. I picked it up years ago for a fiver at a car boot sale and it's been lying around gathering dust ever since.

If that were my thermometer, I would have to turn the heating up a couple of degrees.

I would be extremely happy to receive that as a gift, and it sure beats a box of Quality Street, doesn't it.

And all the more so with it seemingly being on the verge of acquiring antique status.

I once found an old tin during a house clearance stuffed with old stamps. To cut a long story short I eventually had them valued and although most were shlt the guy offered me £150 for one of them, a reasonable amount of money in the 80s, and to which I said thank you very much as I bit his hand off.

Old toys can be worth a small fortune as well, so don't throw them out, have them valued just in case.

My house is very modern, with select vintage and a few antique pieces on show, nothing too expensive (if any burglars are reading). I mean, where would you find another one of those thermometers and even if you just used it as a paperweight it is much more interesting and quirky than a glass ball that snows when you shake it and which has Blackpool written inside it. :)

Turn the heating up? No way! I am in solidarity with the nation's pensioners. If they can't have the heating on, neither will I... ;)

I'm a pensioner and my heating is well and truly on. I do appreciate your sacrifice, though, and I will be thinking of you sitting there in the cold on my behalf. :)

Whenever I see the banter in here I think 'Boys Will Be Boys', and when you partake in the horseplay I visualise your posts being uttered by Will Hay. :)
