What is the obsession in the US with Amazing Grace?

It’s in loads of books, TV programmes, films. Or is it just because it’s easily recognisable?

Bizarre.

ok. history says it's what the 'slaves' used to sing while working the fields.

I also think that it's laziness by US authors and television / film writers to always use the same hymn.

Another question of equal weight. Is why do American's vote for absolute morons to be president? Reagan, Bush Jnr, and Trump? Always trying to make America great again when it is already great lol Not like Britain where the empire was lost lol as for the song it isn't a bad ditty and a bit of an ear worm.

I'm not sure that I'd totally agree with Reagan being a moron - end of Cold War etc..
You would have to blame the education system and the ridiculous obsession with patriotism : flags, pledge of allegiance, hand on heart etc., as well as the need to attend the zillion churches despite very non-Christian attitudes (racism, guns ...)
As for Britain, I'd like our government to strive to avoid the idea that the country should be a world power. Let's spend our money more meaningfully and sit back and be a Norway or a Switzerland with out visions of grandeur
