We are just another species of animal. Our highly developed brain might set us apart from every other species on the planet, but our biology is no different. As far as the universe is concerned, we have no particular significance.

I find bionics fascinating - the labyrinthine ventilation of the termite nest, to the jet propulsion of the siphonophore, to the electrolocation of the electric eel and the platypus. Of course hubris can be a problem. No one with a knowledge of history could doubt that.

However, I believe that low self-esteem and a sense of human wretchedness can also cause problems. I'm reading a lot about the dark triad, and traits like narcissism and sadism are often deeply effected by the environment. A history of abuse, of being made to feel small, of neglect can also create a weapon. Think of the humiliation and weakness that gave rise to Nazism. This is one reason my hackles raise when I hear about human hubris as the sole problem. Paradoxically, I think often more self-esteem would make humans less dangerous and more healthy.
