Jobseeker's allowance is going people are being moved onto universal credit by the end of the year.

Universal Credit (UC) is replacing a number of benefits and tax credits, including:

  • Child Tax Credit
  • Housing Benefit
  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA)
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Working Tax Credit

On the old JSA, if you worked a week in hand, they didn't count that week as income, on uc they do.
If you worked a week on JSA they would close down your account, on uc they will keep it open for up to 6 months.

UC reflex's the growing numbers of temporary workers in the UK and how employment's change in the last 20 years.

The other reason is saving on admin costs and staff training.

I've heard reports over the past few weeks of people waiting months for payments after the move to UC. UC been around for over 10 years but there millions still on the old benefit system. Its going to take time to sort them all out.

I hate to say this but most people will be better off on UC.

In 2024/25, the maximum weekly rate for New Style Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) is £71.70 for those under 25 and £90.50 for those 25 or over. The standard monthly allowance for Universal Credit is £393.45 for single people aged 25 or over.

JSA pays around £362 for a 4 week period.
UC pays £393 per month.

I can see why the government doing this, but if you don't have a smart phone and computer its hard to access the welfare system. They're giving away free smart phones but you need to be on benefits to get one.

I'm sure it wont belong before the media is full of stories of falling system yet again.
