The British Horseracing Authority is investigating New Zealand equestrian great Sir Mark Todd, saying his repeated use of a branch on a horse was “a long way short of the standards of care” expected from licensed trainers.

Todd apologised for his actions after video footage surfaced online of him beating a horse to get it into a water jump.

A spokesman for the BHA said: “The footage seen this weekend of Sir Mark Todd hitting a horse with a branch has rightly caused anger and upset within the equestrian community and beyond.

“His behaviour, for which he has apologised, fell a long way short of the standards of care we expect of licensed individuals and that we know is provided to the overwhelming majority of horses in training in Britain every day. The BHA is looking into the incident.”

Todd apologised, admitting he had strayed from his own high standards when working with horses.

“I wholeheartedly apologise to the horse and all involved for my actions in this video clip,” Todd said.

“One of the main things I preach is about establishing mutual respect between horse and rider and that patience and kindness is the best way to get results.

“I believe this is one of the main attributes along with a great empathy with animals that has enabled me to have a long and successful career in eventing. I am very disappointed in myself that I did not adhere to that in this case.”

I very nearly commented about this yesterday as well. I already knew however the 'hang em high' mob would be nowhere to be seen in great numbers expressing their outrage, Sir Mark is knighted and white and one of them.

It also was NOT a branch. Carefully chosen by the BHA press office to make the incident appear less serious than it was. It was a flexible rod where all the foliage had been deliberately removed and which was used to savagely beat the horse until the animal complied.

They also claim it was a 'one-off' incident. Of course, it wasn't and no doubt Sir Mark is rather handy with a "branch" when there are no prying eyes around to film it.

The cat video was ages ago, 7 months or so I believe.

It is telling that there hasn't been a whisper on this thread from the 'jail him, expel him, hand him high, fire him, disgrace him' mob, not a mummer, or baying for his blood, as they did with the cat kicker video.

I worked with show jumpers back in the early 90s and saw things like this far too often.

Not everybody, but some. Often from riders lacking skill or empathy.
