The BBC is often attacked by the right-wing for having a favorable bias towards liberals and the left-wing. However, studies into the broadcaster’s output and coverage show that the BBC is actually biased against the left-wing of the political spectrum. This claim is backed up by the fact that many prominent political commentators and journalists at the BBC also have a background in conservative political groups.

The supposed left-wing bias of the BBC pertains mainly to criticisms by the right that the BBC has a liberal stance on issues such as immigration, Islam, feminism, gay and transgender rights. This appears to be correct — these issues are treated in a relatively liberal manner by the BBC — but that does not mean that the BBC is a liberal-leaning institution.

Rather, the BBC is a neoliberal institution; one that seeks to incorporate a very specific and narrow idea of social liberalism into the centre-right of the political spectrum — to make it appear somewhat liberal and accommodating of alternative opinions and views. The coverage and treatment of Jeremy Corbyn, his supporters, and the left by the BBC is the latest testament to the fact that they are biased in favour of this very narrow neoliberal centre-right.

The right-wing and its press, in particular, have for many years been at war with the BBC. They have persistently insisted that the BBC is biased towards liberalism and that the right is neglected, derided and ignored by liberal elites and the broadcaster.

This is mainly based on the fact that the BBC is sympathetic to coverage of issues such as immigration, and minorities. The treatment of these issues has very little to do with liberalism, and can more easily be defined as a bias towards the neoliberal view of the world — one which is ultimately on the centre-right of the political spectrum. The BBC may give liberal coverage to certain social issues — such as those of immigrants, and minorities, but that is because those views fit very neatly into the central idea of diversity that neo-liberalism has increasingly come to embrace. This, in turn, creates a facade of liberalism, but it is far from a true representation of the left.

Further to this, if the BBC was genuinely a left-liberal-biased institution then surely every Corbyn supporter in the country would be screaming from the hills with sheer delight about the massive amount of positive coverage he — and the center left are getting every day on the BBC.

Yet this isn’t happening — and the opposite claim is being made against the BBC — that they are biased towards the centre-right. This is not just a subjective claim, it has been evidenced by large-scale studies on the subject.

The researchers’ quantitative analysis of BBC News showed that critics of Corbyn were given twice as much airtime as his supporters and that the issues mobilized by his critics were given a much greater prominence. The report also noted the derogatory language BBC reporters used to describe Jeremy Corbyn, his team, and his supporters.

Enjoy.

Thank you TwoWhales and I should add Evolve Politics is among a number of REAL left-wing sites that are regulated by IMPRESS. IMPRESS, the UK’s only Leveson-compliant press regulator I should add.

This means these sites are held to far higher regulatory standards than right-wing rags such as the Daily Muck and the Scum and also the MSM in general.

British news channels are blatantly biased against Jeremy Corbyn, giving far more airtime to commentators who openly criticize the Labour Party leader than those who support him, a second study of the phenomenon shows.

New research by the Media Reform Coalition and Birkbeck University of London shows there has been a “clear and consistent bias” both online and on television against Corbyn since the coup against his leadership was launched after the EU referendum.

Similar conclusions were drawn earlier in July by a similar London School of Economics (LSE) study.

Outlets, including the BBC, were found to have given Corbyn opponents double the airtime afforded to Corbynistas.

The report found “a marked and persistent imbalance in favour of sources critical of Jeremy Corbyn, the issues that they sought to highlight, and the arguments they advanced.”

It also found a “strong tendency within the main BBC evening news bulletins for reporters to use pejorative language when describing Jeremy Corbyn and his supporters, including words like ‘hostile’ and ‘hard core.’”

Media critic Roy Greens said the findings should force reporters and editors to face “the reality of their bias.”

Compiled by Dr. Justin Schlosberg, the study compared news pieces about Corbyn’s leadership struggle as seen through the lens of the BBC, ITV, the Daily Mail, the Huffington Post, IBTimes, the Mirror, the Independent, the Guardian and the Telegraph.

And as far as opinion pieces were concerned both the Telegraph and the Daily Mail failed to publish any article supportive of the leader of the opposition.

The outlet most sympathetic with Corbyn was the Huffington Post, which divided its coverage between 50 percent pro-Corbyn comment and 50 percent critical or unclear.

“Amidst the social fracturing and polarisation of democratic life post-Brexit, the need for a more plural and inclusive mainstream news media has never been more urgent,” Schlosberg said.

“We hope that broadcasters and editors will respond positively to our call to consider the impact of imbalanced reporting on the democratic process.”

The Leveson inquiry was a judicial public inquiry into the culture, practices and ethics of the British press following the News International phone-hacking scandal, chaired by Lord Justice Leveson, who was appointed in July 2011. A series of public hearings were held throughout 2011 and 2012.

The Independent Press Standards Organisation is “not fit for purpose”, and its complaints process “seems designed to deter”. Based on blueprints drawn up by two Conservative peers, overseen by a secretive committee of newspaper executives, and tasked with enforcing a code written by newspaper editors, the Ipso system is ineffective and riddled with pro-industry biases.

Introducing the Leveson system of independent self-regulation is critical to restoring trust in the press and protecting the integrity of our democracy, and should be a priority for any government.

'Before to the 2019 general election, the BBC was criticised for biased coverage that favoured the ruling Conservative Party. For instance, issue was taken with a clip used from a BBC Question Time leader's special episode in which the part showing audience laughter at Prime Minister Boris Johnson's response to a certain question was edited out. BBC officials addressed the issue and admitted their mistake. Furthermore, the BBC was accused of subjecting Jeremy Corbyn and Jo Swinson to a gruelling interview by Andrew Neil but not requiring Johnson to go through the same and of arranging it beforehand.

Some commentators, such as Peter Oborne, have argued that there is a culture of "client journalism" which has flourished in recent years due to a closeness between the BBC and the ruling Conservative Party, which has led to their bias in favour of the establishment. For example, from 2008 to 2017, Robbie Gibb was head of the BBC Westminster and therefore in charge of the BBC's political programming. His brother, Nick Gibb, is a Conservative MP and Minister for Schools, and Robbie Gibb took a job with Theresa May as Director of Communications immediately after resigning from the BBC. The Director-General as of September 2020, Tim Davie, is a former Conservative Party councilor. In addition, the new Chairman of the BBC, Richard Sharp, has donated over £400,000 to the Conservative Party since 2001. Among journalists, Andrew Neil, editor of The Spectator and co-founder of GB News, which aims to be a British equivalent of Fox News has faced criticism for his right-wing politics, while BBC Political Editor Laura Kuenssberg has also been criticised for perceived "client journalism", as well as uncritically repeating stories from anonymous government sources as news, which later transpired to be false.' - W

The release of the Forde Inquiry’s report on its investigation into the conduct of right-wing former staff in the Labour party and the WhatsApp messages and emails revealed in a leaked Labour report last year has been delayed indefinitely. The investigation, commissioned by Sir Keir Starmer, was due to report last summer but has been repeatedly delayed amid accusations that Starmer had only ordered the investigation for the sake of appearances to appease the Corbyn supporting Labour left.

The Forde Inquiry (if it is ever released) will no doubt DEMONSTRATE the lengths the right-wing of the Labour party went to sabotage Labour's chances prior to the general election in 2017, racism and abuse, misdirection of funds and the deliberate obstruction of complaint processes.

Combined with the BBC and the MSM.

I humbly apologize but the global community of politicians, scientists, doctors, the entire world's MSM, and green lizard men from Mars are not involved in this one.

This one is just a simple case of a corrupt British establishment, rigged electoral system, and a gutter press British MSM and national broadcaster that combined forces to prevent a left-wing political ideology from being democratically elected to form government.

You need a new response. Some words would be a start but I know you struggle with that (unless praising Shouty Man for his nonsensical rants).

Btw Tiddles, I noticed you yet again failed to respond to my question. You are rapidly losing all credibility.
