I did order a new kayak from America last month and not give it much thought. Stuff had come in thru DHL and Royal Mail before without issues. You just pay them online and they deliver to your door.
Not this time
This time Delta cargo used. This meant dealing with all the paper work myself on arrival. First they wont let you deal with it yourself, it needs to be a business. They tell you to find a freight forwarding service provider over the phone. Its a hard thing to do on a Saturday afternoon. All this costs extra money on top of what you paid for delivery.
This is what they charge for a $1175 kayak.
Clearance £60
Airline Handling £65
Additional Tarrif £5
Customs Duty £18.67
Customs Vat £190.46
Advancement £55.87
Admin £15.00
Total £410.00
These costs need to be paid before they let you collect it.
I was lucky this came in on the weekend, they didn't start charging me storage at the airport until Monday. First day its £25, £50 per day for the next 2 days, then the price doubles
You cant afford to wait for too long......... the costs start to spiral out of control after a few days.
Its been an experience I dont wont to repeat. I did learn a lot ......... but next time I will take a long hard look at the delivery service the company is using before using them. If I'm not happy I will arrange for a collection by another courier.
Its just been endless stress since it arrived
