Keir Starmer plan to build 1.5 million new homes over 5 years is load of crap

Let's say you have the land and permission to build: It takes around 18 months to build 500 houses. A block of flats is about the same.

The question is can you sell them? This all depends on the market and if the economy dips you cant.

And we don't have the sewage system to cope with that many new homes. It means more flooded homes. New housing isn't worth buying too. There wooden frame houses with a brick coating.

Keir Starmer plan will fail, the most anyone will build in the next 5 years is about 500,000 or less. Business will not invest billons into housing to meet this target without tax breaks, something Starmer wont do.

Wouldn't it be fairer to wait five years, and lay into him after he hasn't done it, rather than before he hasn't done it?

Lets look at Ireland then

In 2022, there were 29,851 new dwellings completed, a 45.2% increase from 2021 and a 41.3% increase from 2019.
In 2022, 198,000 people were employed in construction, close to the peak of 210,000 in 2006 and 2007
Between mid-2017 and mid-2022, construction volumes increased by more than 15%.

That's for under 30k new homes.

If we want to build 300,000 new homes, we would need 2 million workers. Now in places like London or Manchester you mite be able to draw in the work force. It wont be cheap.

Now lets look at some where like Ilfracombe, Devon. This is one of those places that really needs more housing.

First what will the locals say when I turn up in me van and start building 1000 new homes? I have a feeling they will start protesting.
Now I have to try and staff it..... all my workers will need hotel rooms to stay in. Do you think you can find a hotel room there for under £100 per nite? Do you think they will be any free hotel rooms over the summer months?

So I'm down the Job Centre looking for staff for me new building project. And I offer to pay low skilled workers £16 per hour. That's £640 for 40 hours before tax. Oh and by the way, you will need to spend £400 just on accommodation.

How many people do you think will come and work for me?

Oh and then you think there must be local people who need the work right? They can drive in from local towns and work for me !!

Nope

I had this problem back in 2017 on a job in Ilfracombe. I couldn't staff the job. Outside the main cities in the UK there aren't the numbers to do the work. And those in the cites wont leave cos there too busy and their rates are higher.
