As a cyclist I welcome any guidelines that make it safer to cycle. The myth that all cyclists are menaces is not true, in my case I go out of my way to be careful.

I have cycled and driven cars, seen it from both sides. My opinion is some cyclists are bloody idiots, as are some car drivers.
One way of making cyclists safer is to maintain cycle lanes so more bike riders will use them...otherwise they are pointless.

The change that bothers me is when you're driving and about to turn left or right at a junction. If a pedestrian is waiting to cross you should give way. This is going to cause some confusion... Pedestrians not knowing they have right of way, cars slowing down at the corner in danger of being rear-ended (Ooh Err!) from the car behind.

What I would really like to see, though it will never happen because of the cost, is a national network of roads for cyclists and perdestrians only, no cars allowed.

This would also be my solution and is the norm in cycle-friendly countries like Holland.

The problem is our town planners don't think long-term in regards to road planning. Most of our towns and cities were designed for an age where vehicles were far and few between and there just isn't the physical space now in urban areas for the huge increase in the overall amount of traffic.

There should also be no VAT on cycle sales! People should be encouraged to physical exercise and not be financially burdened, the cost more than easily recovered by savings to the NHS.

Have you guys ever seen London cyclists? For every decent careful one there are a dozen other menaces
