At this time of year, people call in the builders to tart up there grotty old houses

One of my neighbours had the builders working inside their home, one cut thru a gas pipe about 2pm. Of course gas comes pouring out and they had to ring the gas emergency number after turning it off at the meter.

SNG turn up and kick everyone out the house while they carried out tests and found the house supply was leaking. And then kick the people out on either side of the house too. Its taken until 1am to dig up the pipe and fix it. There just letting people into their homes now to pick up clothes. God only knows how much they will bill the home owner for. I don't think house insurant will cover the cost.

Now due to the gas being off in all 3 houses, they need a gas engineer to come out and purge the systems before they turn the gas back on and make repairs. If they can get one, its going to take a few days to get someone round. Even more expense.

All 3 houses are now empty, the owners are in hotels until the gas is back on.

I've been watching it unfold all day off and on. I'm still not sure how you cut thru a gas pipe by accident these days. with pipe detectors and other stuff on the market. I think it just comes down to a bad builder cutting corners.

I'm sat here trying to work out the final bill.... it's got be over 10k

It makes you think, storm Bert did a lot of damage here, but it took a moron with a multi tool hitting a gas pipe to cause an evacuation.

When I sold up and move into my current home I deiced to take the green grant and remove the gas heating system replacing it with a pellet burner system. After watching the fun and games over the road today, its one of the smartest things I've ever done ;)

I remember cutting through a gas pipe while working at someone's house. About 5 minutes before it happened, a colleague -Malc, the joiner- said. "don't cut through the gas pipe, to which I replied, "I'm not an idiot". And then I cut through the gas pipe.

Reminds me of the time I was replacing the bit of old skirting on the fireplace wall, Hammered the nail in and it went right though the gas pipe in the wall. Who knew there was a gas pipe there? Very embarrassing having to call them out. Mind, I suppose it could have been worse, a spark and gas do not go well together!
