Most modern fights the fix is in. This one was pure fighter vs fighter. Till the end. Then fix was in. Discuss.

I do like the names they gave to fights in the old days... 'Thriller in Manilla'. :) Not forgetting 'The Rumble in the Jungle!' When Ali finally got his title back, if only he had retired then... As for fixing... The Liston/Ali fight springs to mind...

Great names for the fights! Rumble was a great one, nobody gave Ali a chance after Foreman mauled Frazier. Yes he could have gone out on a high. Laughs yes that one was dubious! Thank you for commenting! Henry Cooper was diddled as well with the old bugger Alis glove up ploy so he could recover lol

When I was a young child, for my birthday, father gave me a very old book. I think it was a first edition, It was called 'The Roar of the Crowd'. the autobiography of James Corbett who became the first heavyweight boxing champion (I had an unusual childhood ) He was known as 'Gentleman Jim' because he brought style, class and ringcraft to the sport. I got two things from that book, a love of reading and an interest in boxing history. I still love reading but my interest in boxing has long since ended.
In the 1920s there were two great boxers Jack Dempsey and Gene Tunney? not sure of the spelling there. Anyway, they met up for the heavyweight title... Dempsey knocked Tunney down, the first time he had ever been down, but the referee took ages to count to 10. The count was so slow that it allowed Tunney to get back up and eventually he won. That famous fight then became known as 'The night of the long count' something like that, my memory is not what it was...
Was the 'fix' in? we'll never know...

Butch Coolidge from the movie 'Pulp fiction' does the dirty on a mob boss...instead of taking a dive like he was paid to do, he wins the fight having backed himself which by then with the inside info affecting the market would have been great odds...
Great movie I am sure most people have seen and don't need my explanation...

Yes, I don't tend to watch much of the modern boxing. The book sounds great! Jack Dempsey rings a bell! Thank you for the story I didn't know that one! There is a good movie with Humphrey Bogart called the Harder They Fall. Based on a book I think. Bit daft in places but it points out the rigging back then. Thank you for the insightful post!

Great film! I loved that he didn't take a dive and the pitch black comedy that follows due to his choice! It is great that we don't see the fight either we just hear it on the radio! I bet he made a fair few quid! Soundtrack is fabulous too!
