I was singing a nursery rhyme to the granddaughter "Oh the big ships sails on the ally-ally-oh, the ally-ally-oh.. .... on the last day of September". When she asked me what the ally-ally-oh was... Well, as you can imagine, I was bit stumped for an answer. So I thought a search on the internet would fill that gap in my knowledge. How wrong was I I could not get a definitive answer. It refers to the Manchester ship canal - no it doesn't, as the rhyme predates the canal. It's the Saint Lawrence Seaway in Canada, because it freezes over in October so no ships can sail after Sept... The ally-ally-oh is The Atlantic Ocean etc etc
