Driving back from Maryport I stopped off at Cockermouth. I couldn't help wondering how these places get their names. I was reminded of the time when we stopped off at Clitheroe and the ex insisted on pronouncing it Clit-hero. :rolleyes:

Any other place names that tickle your fancy?...

A friend lives at ....NO PLACE ..which is next to Beamish Outdoor Museum Co.Durham and close to ....PITY ME.

Fencehouses (the streets stunk of green) , Newbottle (both Sunderland)..........used to work at Pity Me

When I lived in Yorkshire drove through a village called Wetwang.
Didn't get laid though.

There are actually a plethora of amusing place names in Scotland that I can think of. Sure there are many more.

1. Peiness in Skye
2. Lost in Aberdeenshire
3. Brokenwind in Aberdeenshire
4. Ae (pronounded "eh") in Dumfries and Galloway
5. Dull in Perthshire
6. Assloss in Ayrshire
7. Hell and Purgatory in Orkney
8. Twatt (both Orkney and Shetland)
