Aren't 'boy bands' a group of supposed singers who cannot either play music or compose it themselves?

DO pay attention to what others tell you. Boy bands neither write nor play their own music!
The Beatles wrote the vast majority of their own work and played it themselves.

Whilst I agree with your choice as a fine example, I do not classify The Four Seasons as a 'boy band'. They were a musical group who could play and write their own compositions. The modern idiom of the term would suggest that 'boy bands' are primarily a group of talentless youths who can do neither of the aforementioned.
